NFL players carry the dreams of their fans throughout the season. These fans regard these players close to deities and place extremely high expectations to win upon them. Some fans do that for the glory of team victory, and others do it for the somewhat selfish glory of their fantasy football teams. But it’s difficult for athletes to live up to these hopes and play at a consistently high level.

Injuries are a constant detractor from success in the NFL. Players also grow older and their performance declines. Others leave one team and join another roster but struggle to adapt. Then there are the overpaid and overrated stars who just don’t deliver the goods after securing the bag. With training camp just getting underway for this year, the season is sure to contain a mix of all those archetypes. So let’s look at 50 players who won’t live up to their hype this season.

Deebo Samuel

Samuel kicks off this list in an interesting spot because he doesn’t want to be in San Francisco. The wide receiver had a long holdout during the offseason, even allegedly demanding a trade, but it appears as though he’ll play in 2022. However, the resentment threatened to boil over and it remains to be seen how it affects his game.

He was one of the true breakout stars of the 2021 season but Samuel is only human. Repeating last year’s insane all-purpose production is going to be next to impossible. A controversial video emerged of the wideout refusing to sign a young boy’s ball after practice. This suggests that all isn’t well and he isn’t pleased with the way things have turned out (via CBS Sports).

Joe Burrow

Burrow’s inclusion on this list will be understandably polarizing, but he’s here for a reason. It will be extremely tough for the Bengals to live up to last season because a lot of things going in their favor. Arguably, they lucked out when they met the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game (via Sportscasting) and won to make it to the Super Bowl. It could be said that several lucky breaks went their way throughout their previous playoff victories over the Titans and Raiders as well.

have a tough time repeating their success from 2022. Competition has increased with the Browns spending big money and the Ravens on the comeback trail. If they fall short it will disappoint their long-suffering fanbase.

Trey Lance

Lance may have a good season but he could disappoint Niners fans who think he’s the next Messiah. They’re building him up because they’re justifiably sick of Jimmy Garoppolo. They want somebody with the consistency of a New York bodega’s opening hours.

The problem is that Lance doesn’t have a lot of experience. He’s going to make mistakes in his sophomore year and that’s natural. We’re not saying that he’ll never be an elite quarterback but he’s not at the same level as a second-year Patrick Mahomes (via Sports Illustrated).

Jared Goff

Goff wasn’t terrible for the Lions in 2021, but he’s not the team’s long-term solution at quarterback either. We’ve seen how somebody like Joe Burrow can change the fortunes of a franchise but the Lions will tread water until they replace Goff. He will quietly continue to start games this season but won’t overwhelm anybody.

Sean McVay says that he’s sorry about how things ended between him and the young QB. But the reality is that as soon as Goff left, the Rams won a Super Bowl last year. Detroit will move on eventually with a likely move into the market next summer. Goff is playing on borrowed time as an NFL starter (via NBC Sports).

Aaron Rodgers

It would be easy for Rodgers to take his foot off the gas pedal after signing his new contract. Some fans will resent this accusation because they think his bodily fluids are divine relics. But the way he treated the Packers and manipulated the Broncos was as disgraceful as it was brilliant.

The reality is that Rodgers is getting old and he’s lost his most dangerous weapon in Davante Adams. After putting out a massive song and dance he may decline. We’ve seen it happen to players in the past so it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise (via ESPN).

Landry was one of the top performers for a mediocre Cleveland Browns franchise. The trouble with this was that he carried a lot of expectation. This was a problem for him in 2021 as his displays began to deteriorate (via SB Nation).

The Jaguars had the first overall pick for the second consecutive season and chose Georgia’s Walker. The edge rusher has a massive amount of talent but there remain doubts over whether they should have chosen him. That’s because of Aidan Hutchinson’s brilliance throughout the year.

Detroit thought that they got the better deal when they made Hutchinson the second overall pick. Walker faces a lot of pressure because he will want to prove that he’s better than his rival. He must live up to high expectations as the Jaguars hope to finally show signs of progression (via 247 Sports).

Njoku has only topped 500 receiving yards once in his career and that was four years ago. For some reason, the Browns still decided to make him one of the highest-paid tight ends in the league. However, there isn’t much to suggest that Njoku will justify this amount of cash.

Cleveland doesn’t mind throwing money around at mediocre players or controversial athletes who might not even be able to play. There’s also a solid chance that Jacoby Brisset will be the Browns’ starter in 2022 after they burnt bridges with Baker Mayfield and traded him to Carolina (via Seattle Times).

It may seem harsh to pick on Walker before he even steps onto an NFL field. However, the Packers may have made a mistake in selecting the former Georgia linebacker because he is very raw. Walker was a late riser during the Draft and went higher than most people expected.

Green Bay surprised many people when they opted for a linebacker when they lost Davante Adams during the offseason. Furthermore, Walker’s traits and statistics don’t stand out compared to some of his competition. A first-round pick brings a lot of pressure for Walker to live up to (via SBNation).

Carr is a curious figure because there’s no doubting his talent. Furthermore, he’s a decent leader as he showed us one of the Raiders’ most stable figures in 2022. But there are question marks about his ability to guide the franchise over the line and make a deep playoff run.

Nobody is sure if he’s elite or not but it appears as though we’ll find out now. He finally has an elite weapon in Davante Adams so there are no excuses if it doesn’t work out for him. The pair shared a quarterback-receiver relationship in college but that was a long time ago (via The Analyst).

Michael Brockers

Brockers is an incredibly tough individual so it’s no wonder that Dan Campbell loves him. Remember Campbell’s opening press conference when he advocated biting kneecaps? Brockers is the epitome of everything that the polarizing head coach adores in football (via Sports Illustrated).

However, he only achieved a single sack in 16 starts in 2021 which sums up their roster. We saw on multiple occasions in 2021 that the Lions played with a lot of heart and ambition. Ultimately, their lack of talent and quality prevented them from sealing wins and Brockers isn’t the addition that will change this.

Watt is one of the NFL’s most popular players and was a defensive stalwart for the Houston Texans. But now he’s growing older and he’s no longer as effective as he once was. This is natural but it’s never nice to see our heroes aging and deteriorating before our eyes (via People).

His injury record is horrific as he’s completed a full season once since 2015. Meanwhile, Watt’s production is also in stark decline. The Cardinals hoped that he would change their defense but the reality is that he doesn’t play enough. It’s a shame but Watt may not even play much this year either.

The Patriots think (or maybe hope) that Jones is the reincarnation Tom Brady because of their similar appearances. It’s also true that he had the best season out of any of last year’s rookie quarterbacks. Now Jones must take the next step and help the Patriots back into playoff contention. They’ll be hoping that he has a similar impact on the franchise as Joe Burrow. That’s the effect a top quarterback can have but the problem is that Jones may not live up to the hype (via NBC Sports).

Bud Dupree

It’s safe to say that things didn’t go the way Dupree hoped during his first season with the Titans. He didn’t live up to his high standards and disappointed the franchise with his performances. Dupree was one of the best players in the league in 2019 but things haven’t worked out since.

One day people are going to look back at Hill’s career and question how he stayed in the NFL for so long. Nobody can deny his confidence because he persuaded himself that he was a starting quarterback. Unfortunately, he received a reality check in 2021 and it was a harsh lesson (via SB Nation).

Fascinatingly, the Saints refused to give up on their gadget player and tried to convert him into a tight end. It remains to be seen if he can fill the gap and blossom in this role. Green is another man whose recent form fell off a cliff after years of brilliance. It’s not entirely his fault because age catches up with everybody but it’s a shame that he can’t be a world-beater forever. He joined the Cardinals in 2021 but his productivity was no longer amazing.

Gage isn’t a bad player by any means and he’ll likely do reasonably well in Tampa Bay. But they’re paying him to be more than an above-average wideout and we’re not sure he’s at that level. This is indeed an inflated market but he’s one of the real beneficiaries in this case.

There’s no chance that Gage ousts Mike Evans in the pecking order. Gage will get his targets but he has a lot to prove, especially once Chris Godwin returns from a torn ACL. They’re paying him $30 million across three years which seems like a lot considering his role. Perhaps he’ll step up and live up to his contract (via Tampa Bay).

Trevor Lawrence

Few players received as much hype as Lawrence before the 2022 season. The Jaguars leaped at the chance to use the first overall pick to select him in the NFL Draft. But he endured a tumultuous spell in a shocking situation with Urban Meyer as they blew his rookie season (via The Ringer).

Adams is one of those players who aren’t as good as he thinks he is. The Seahawks star hasn’t been brilliant for the past two seasons compared to his reputation. The safety had his worst season ever concerning receiving yards and touchdowns allowed. Adams must step up now that the team is in transition. This is likely to be a lost year for the Seahawks and they may seek a coaching change at the end of the year (via The Athletic).

In another life, Hurts is still sitting on the bench behind Carson Wentz. However, the latter’s career meltdown catapulted Hurts into the spotlight as he became an NFL starter. The Dolphins paid a premium to secure the services of Edmonds after the running back departed Arizona. With this in mind, most fans expect him to be a starter because he’s earning that kind of money. Edmonds spent his time in Phoenix as a rotational player. Yes, he secured plenty of touches but he never sealed his status as a key player that his hype suggested before last year. Let’s start with the positives first because we don’t want to be completely negative. Brown has a good relationship with Cardinals’ quarterback, Kyler Murray, from their days together at the University of Oklahoma. The Titans lost a proven performer when they traded A.J. Brown to the Eagles. The upside was that Brown isn’t the player he once was and they avoided paying a $100 million extension. However, they didn’t land a direct replacement when they drafted Burks.

At least, he’s not capable of bringing Brown’s peak levels of productivity yet. We’re not saying that he won’t eventually live up to Mike Vrabel’s expectations but it’s unlikely to happen in his rookie year. Nonetheless, he’s likely to receive a baptism of fire (via Arkansas Razorbacks).

Derrick Henry

Few players carry the weight of a franchise like Henry who is one of the most important players in the league. However, Mike Vrabel’s Titans had a disproportionate dependency on their star running back and ran him into the ground. It was no surprise when he finally succumbed to injury in 2021.

Unfortunately, the level of punishment that he’s absorbed is unsustainable. It may be that this is the season where Henry’s output declines because his body is paying the price. He may prove us wrong and we hope so because he’s so exciting. But it wouldn’t be a shock if his numbers went off a cliff (via Fansided).

Wan’Dale Robinson

The Giants’ selection of Robinson makes complete sense if they mixed up his name and meant to choose somebody else. Otherwise, there is no justification for picking the former Kentucky season so early. Now he must live up to expectations that it’s unlikely he can meet.

There were many better options available but the Giants still opted for the lightweight receiver. He’ll need to pack on the pounds and hit the weight room before the new seasons because NFL defenses will eat him for breakfast. It’s one of the weirdest picks in recent years (via The Sportster).

Tyreek Hill

There were three blockbuster trades during the offseason in 2022. There was Russell Wilson’s move to the Denver Broncos from Seattle and Davante Adam’s move to the Raiders after several years with the Green Bay Packers. But Hill’s departure from Kansas City to Miami was just almost as big. However, there are doubts about his ability to succeed in the Sunshine State.

One part of this is the reality that Tua Tagovailoa is not Patrick Mahomes regardless of the brash claims the he is Hill has been making on his podcast. It will be difficult for Hill to achieve high productivity with the polarizing third-year quarterback pulling the strings. Meanwhile, Hill isn’t as young as he once was and his speed could decline in Miami (via FOX News).

Brady is the most successful NFL player and the greatest quarterback in history. However, he’s also 44 and this may be the season that catches up with the iconic star. Fans have indeed been saying that for the past decade about Brady but it’s a risk.

Furthermore, Brady’s commitment is questionable after he appeared to retire at the end of the 2021-22 season. His partner in crime, Rob Gronkowski also quit the sport for good for now so this may take his production down a tick. The Buccaneers signed longtime tight end Kyle Rudolph but that’s a tough ask to expect him to replace Gronk’s role. Star wideout Chris Godwin is also still recovering from a last-season torn ACL. Brady may not live up to the hype but he’s already sealed his legacy, unlike others on this list (via theScore).
